Click For VideoThe Kansas City Chiefs were founded in 1959 as the Dallas Texans, making them one of the original teams in the American Football League (AFL). Lamar Hunt started the team, which moved to Kansas City in 1963. The franchise has celebrated four Super Bowl wins and five AFL/NFL championships, with its most memorable periods occurring in the late 1960s and the current Reid-Mahomes era.
Lamar Hunt created the AFL after the NFL turned down his bid to buy an expansion team. The Dallas Texans quickly made a name for themselves, clinching the 1962 AFL Championship. To tap into a more profitable market and steer clear of competition with the NFL's Dallas Cowboys, Hunt shifted the team to Kansas City and renamed them the Chiefs.
Under the creative coaching of Hank Stram, the Chiefs became the top team in the AFL. They claimed AFL championships in 1966 and 1969, and were among the few teams to compete in several Super Bowls before the AFL-NFL merger in 1970. Super Bowl I (1967): The Chiefs represented the AFL in the inaugural AFL-NFL World Championship game but fell short against the Green Bay Packers. Super Bowl IV (1970): The Chiefs achieved their first Lombardi Trophy with a stunning 23-7 victory over the heavily favored Minnesota Vikings.
The franchise soared to new heights after bringing on Head Coach Andy Reid in 2013 and drafting quarterback Patrick Mahomes in 2017. This duo has turned the Chiefs into one of the most formidable dynasties in NFL history. View Kansas City Chiefs Madden Gameplay Photos and videos.
