Initially named the Boston Patriots, the team played at various locations before moving to Foxborough, Massachusetts, and rebranding as the New England Patriots in 1971.
Founding: In 1959, Boston businessman Billy Sullivan Jr. obtained the eighth and final AFL franchise. The name "Patriots" was selected through a fan contest. Stadiums: In the early years, the team faced challenges in securing a permanent venue, playing at Boston University Field, Fenway Park, and Harvard Stadium. First Super Bowl: The franchise made its first Super Bowl appearance (Super Bowl XX) in 1986 under head coach Raymond Berry, but suffered a significant defeat against the Chicago Bears. Return to the Big Game: They returned to the Super Bowl (Super Bowl XXXI) in 1997 under head coach Bill Parcells, only to be defeated by the Green Bay Packers.
The year 2000 signified the onset of what is arguably the most remarkable dynasty in NFL history, spearheaded by head coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady. Six Championships: The team secured six Super Bowl titles (XXXVI, XXXVIII, XXXIX, XLIX, LI, and LIII).Unblemished Season: In 2007, the Patriots completed the regular season with a flawless 16–0 record, becoming the first team in NFL history to achieve this in a 16-game season. Sustained Dominance: From 2001 to 2019, New England achieved an extraordinary 19 consecutive winning seasons and reached an NFL-record 12 Super Bowls.
Brady's Departure: Tom Brady departed from New England during the 2020 offseason as a free agent. The team faced difficulties and roster changes, culminating in the exit of Bill Belichick after the 2023 season. New Leadership: Patriots Jerod Mayo, a former linebacker for the Patriots, assumed the role of head coach. The front office focused on the draft to identify their next franchise cornerstones.
